Thomas Backenstose, DMD
Dr. Backenstose has been practicing dentistry for over 30 years - and that’s a lot of smiles served! Throughout his career, he has worked in practices from Hershey, PA to Minneapolis, MN and then back to the Philadelphia area. Through his work, he is pleased to continue legacies of compassionate care and personalized dentistry his predecessors have left behind, while also advancing services and technologies to offer the most modern dentistry possible.
Dr. Backenstose earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Next, he received his certificate in prosthodontics from Temple University. Dr. Backenstose has had the opportunity to practice under a long list of impressive professors and mentors, but above all, he thanks his father, Dr. Charles Jerge, for being his number one educator. Dr. Morton Amsterdam, Dr. Abe Ingber, and Dr. David Appleby have also made lasting impressions on Dr. Backenstose’s career and approach to dentistry.
Restorative dentistry is Dr. Backenstose’s favorite area of practice, as he appreciates the mix of science and art, form and function that it requires. Outside of dentistry, the doctor enjoys golf, cooking, travel, and spending time surrounded by lifelong friends. He also has two daughters -- one of whom is studying at Temple Dental School to be a dentist herself. Dr. Backenstose says he appreciates his loving wife for supporting his endeavors and tolerating his eccentricities. Above all, he is motivated and moved most by his family.
